Semax is a synthetic peptide created in the Soviet Union during the early 1980s by researchers working in Moscow. It was built from the short adrenocorticotropic hormone fragment known as ACTH(4-10), and the chain was then extended with three additional amino acids. The resulting molecule was named semax and entered clinical use in Russia in 1994. It is generally described as a nootropic and neuroprotective agent rather than as a hormone analogue.
The parent fragment ACTH(4-10) carries the sequence Met-Glu-His-Phe-Arg-Trp-Gly. Semax replaces the arginine and tryptophan positions with a proline-glycine-proline tail, giving Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro. That change removes residues associated with adrenal stimulation, so the peptide does not drive cortisol release the way full ACTH does. This distinction shapes how the compound is grouped in the literature, where it sits with neuropeptides and peptide neuromodulators rather than with corticosteroids.
Regulatory status varies sharply by country. Semax is registered for medical use in Russia, where it appears in formularies as a nasal solution, and it also holds registration in a small number of neighbouring states. It has no approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration or the European Medicines Agency, and it is not a scheduled controlled substance in most jurisdictions. Elsewhere it circulates mainly as laboratory material, so purity documentation comes from suppliers rather than from a national pharmacopoeia.

Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide whose sequence is Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro. The first four residues correspond to the ACTH(4-10) fragment, while the terminal Pro-Gly-Pro extension was added to improve metabolic stability. Its molecular formula is C37H51N9O10S and its monoisotopic mass is approximately 813.9 Da. The compound is classified as a peptide research chemical and as a registered pharmaceutical product in Russia, but it does not hold marketing approval in the European Union or the United States. Naming conventions vary across supplier catalogs.
Development of the compound took place in the Soviet Union during the 1980s, largely through peptide research groups affiliated with the Shemyakin-Ovchinnikov Institute and Moscow State University. Investigators screened fragments of adrenocorticotropic hormone for activity on the central nervous system while attempting to separate cognitive effects from hormonal ones. The shortened sequence was selected because it retained behavioral activity in animal models without stimulating corticosteroid release. Early publications described the molecule as an ACTH(4-10) analog.
Published research on this peptide originates mainly from Russian laboratories, and the wider international literature is comparatively thin. Studies have used rodent models of stroke, hypoxia, and memory tasks, with a smaller number of human trials reported. Reported outcomes include changes in attention and memory measures, along with effects on neurotrophic factor expression in some experiments. Small sample sizes, inconsistent dosing protocols, and limited independent replication are widely noted limitations, so the strength of the clinical evidence remains an open question.
Calcitriol is a hormone and the active form of vitamin D3, normally made in the kidney. It is also known as or 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (1,25-(OH)2D3). It binds to and activates the vitamin D receptor in the nucleus of the cell, which then increases the expression of many genes. Calcitriol increases blood calcium mainly by increasing the uptake of calcium from the intestines. Calcitriol can be given as a medication for the treatment of osteoporosis, osteomalacia, familial hypophosphatemia, low blood calcium due to hypoparathyroidism, and low blood calcium and hyperparathyroidism due to kidney disease. It can be taken by mouth or by injection into a vein. Excessive amounts or intake can result in weakness, headache, nausea, constipation, urinary tract infections, and abdominal pain. Serious side effects may include high blood calcium and anaphylaxis. Calcitriol was identified as the active form of vitamin D3 in 1971 and the drug was approved for medical use in the United States in 1978. It is available as a generic medication. In 2023, it was the 249th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 1 million prescriptions. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.
== Society and culture == In the United States the FDA requires tablets of the medication to be sold by prescription. Potassium permanganate, however, does not have FDA approved uses and therefore non medical grade potassium permanganate is sometimes used for medical use. It is available under a number of brand names including Permasol, Koi Med Tricho-Ex, and Kalii permanganas RFF. It is occasionally called "Condy's crystals".
The Wikimedia project Scholia provides a graphical interface around data in Wikidata – such as literature about a specific coronavirus protein – to help with research, research-analysis, data interoperability, applications, updates, and data-mining. A group of online archivists used open access PHP- and Linux-based shadow library Sci-Hub to create an archive of over 5000 articles about coronaviruses. Making the archive openly accessible is currently illegal. Sci-Hub provides free full access for most scientific pandemic publications. Multiple scientific publishers created open access portals, including the Cambridge University Press, the Europe branch of the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, The Lancet, John Wiley and Sons, and Springer Nature. Physician and open access advocate Josh Farkas has added a chapter on COVID-19 treatment to his e-book on intensive care medicine, hosted by EMCrit.

== Production == This story was originally offered by Roddenberry as an option for the second pilot titled "The Omega Story". The original script, while not significantly different in tone and message, did have some significant differences in characterization and background information. Since the character of Dr. Leonard McCoy had not been created yet, the ship's surgeon is named Milton Perry, and in one version of the script it is Perry who attempts to use a "Medi-Scanner" to signal the Enterprise, hoping for rescue - only to be killed when Captain Tracey destroys the scanner with his phaser. In addition, the script called for Dr. Carter of the Exeter to be shown dissolving onscreen. The costume designer William Ware Theiss made a production error and mistakenly gave the crew of the USS Exeter a unique uniform insignia, different from the iconic delta on the uniforms of the Enterprise’s crew. The mistake was caught before the episode aired, but it was too late to correct it. A memo was immediately sent out announcing that Gene Roddenberry had been consulted, and that, going forward, every starship crew’s uniform should have same delta insignia that is on the uniforms worn by the Enterprise crew.
=== Golden rice === Golden rice is a recombinant variety of rice that has been engineered to express the enzymes responsible for β-carotene biosynthesis. This variety of rice holds substantial promise for reducing the incidence of vitamin A deficiency in the world's population. Golden rice is not currently in use, pending the resolution of regulatory and intellectual property issues. The Philippines has approved Golden Rice for food, feed, and commercial propagation, but production has since been halted. Cultivation was paused following a 2024 Court of Appeals decision revoking its biosafety permit.
In 1945, Yeshiva University President Samuel Belkin began planning a new medical school. Under his urging, Yeshiva's Board of Trustees negotiated with the New York State Board of Regents to expand the university's charter to grant MD degrees, finalized in December 1950. In 1951, physicist Albert Einstein wrote a letter to Belkin lauding the planned school, writing that it was "of the greatest importance to American Jewry" and would "welcome students of all creeds and races". He became an honorary chairman for the medical school campaign, alongside former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, New York Governor Thomas Dewey, and Richard Nixon. When approached, Einstein was initially reluctant to associate his name with the school—he had recently refused to lend his name to Brandeis University and had declined to become the second president of Israel—and instead suggested that it be named for the Jewish physician Maimonides. Two years later, at an event marking his 74th birthday, March 14, 1953, Einstein agreed to lend his name to the medical school. At the gathering—his only public appearance in 22 years at the Institute for Advanced Study—Einstein told The New York Times that "physics has favored medicine by giving civilized man confidence in the scientific method." In 1954, the college sponsored the awarding of that year's Albert Einstein Award to physicist Richard Feynman and, on his 75th birthday, gifted Einstein a Festschrift with contributions from ten Nobel laureates, Israeli Prime Minister Moshe Sharett, and President Harry S. Truman, among others.

== Company history == The company traces its roots to William Lines, Inc., which began as a shipping business founded by William Chiongbian on December 13, 1945, in Cebu City. He named one of its first vessels, the MV Victoriano, after his father; the ship made its maiden voyage serving the routes from Cebu to Tagbilaran, Bohol, and Siquijor, then to Plaridel and Ozamiz. The company was later incorporated on May 26, 1949. From the 1970s to the 1990s, the company introduced several flagship vessels, including MV Cebu City (1972), MV Doña Virginia (1980), and MV Sugbu (1989), and grew to become one of the largest shipping companies in the Philippines during that period. In the 1990s, William Lines introduced the Mabuhay Series, comprising the company's largest and most luxurious vessels, designed to compete with rival fleets, including Sulpicio Lines and Aboitiz's SuperFerry ships. The first ship of the series, the Wilines Mabuhay 1, was acquired from Japan and was part of the well-known Sunflower series of vessels. Subsequently, William Lines added more ships to the Mabuhay Series, including Mabuhay 2, 3, 5, and 6. In December 1995, William Lines acquired the assets of Gothong Lines and Aboitiz Shipping Corporation through a ₱5.68 billion share-swap deal, issuing new William Lines shares to the two companies in exchange for their shipping properties. The merger consolidated the operations of the three shipping firms, forming William, Gothong and Aboitiz Inc. (WG&A), which became the largest domestic shipping company in the Philippines.
